Container Vegetable Gardening
Meg Barnes, an Advanced Master Gardener, will talk about and show some different containers for growing vegetables. She will also talk about the proper layering for depth and how to add veggies to your flower beds. Learn about starting methods from seed and how to “save” those pre-grown options from the big box stores. Meg will also discuss what veggies and flowers pair well and those that don’t.
Garden Flower Arranging
Cathy Ritch, an award winning National Garden Club Accredited Judge, will demonstrate floral design with garden flowers and materials. Master Gardeners from the Bethel office will cut selections from their own gardens and bring them in the day of the fair. Cathy will then transform them into arrangements and displays. You will learn the basics of balance and form, working with what you can find in your own garden.
Cathy Ritch is a lifelong gardener and lover of flowers. Cathy is happiest when she can make a floral design that uses something from her own yard, or something ‘borrowed’ from the home of a friend. She has won blue ribbons for her designs at several CT flower shows including the top Award of Design Excellence, at the Connecticut Flower and Garden show in Hartford. Cathy has taught workshops and given programs to Garden clubs and at libraries across the state.
Mary will discuss the prevalence of neonicotinoid systemic insecticides in our environment (in surprising forms and products) and the impact of these pesticides on our pollinators. She will cover ways to avoid these products and help our pollinators to thrive.
Mary Wilson is a past Chairman of the Newtown Conservation Commission. www.propollinators.org.
